The course introduces the first year students to biological thinking. It concentrates on key questions and ideas, which are illustrated with carefully selected examples. The main themes are the following: Dual character of life: Replication and heredity; The problem of sexuality, molecular recombination; Some nontrivial problems of evolution: The bases of behaviour; the bases of pattern formation; population dynamics and the organization of ecosystems.
In the lecture the students are introduced into several biological applications of mechanics and optics, and they get knowledge of the physical, mathematical, computational and biological tools necessary to the solution of the treated biomechanical and biooptical problems.
