It has been more than forty years since the publication of this classic science fiction novel that changed the way we look at the stars and ourselves.
From the savannas of Africa at the dawn of mankind to the rings of Saturn as man adventures to the outer rim of our solar system, A Space Odyssey is a journey unlike any other.
This allegory about humanity’s exploration of the universe, and the universe’s reaction to humanity, was the basis for director Stanley Kubrick’s immortal film, and lives on as a hallmark achievement in storytelling. I’m a recent convert to audio books. I once heard a dreadful version of shall we just say tactfully “a” book – so bad I abandoned it and swore never to listen to another audiobook ever again. But I’m so glad I broke my own rule with this one!
Dick Hill reads this exactly as my mind would do! In a novel which is mainly exposition, he reads with conviction and drama. Clarke’s writing is descriptive and yet poetic; it’s easy to lose the rhythm and gentle humour. No danger of that happening here.
It’s an excellent performance full of pace and passion. Some people say the book is a way to help understand the film. I’m not entirely in agreement with that. The book stands by itself as a fine piece of Science Fiction. In fact, this story diverges from the film in several key scenes. I’ve seen the film over 80 times, it is my favourite film and introduced me to Stanley Kubrick’s other work. I was already a fan of Arthur C Clarke, and have been since school. So I came to this with a little trepidation and quiet hope.
However, I have no hesitation in recommending this audiobook. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Originally read this just after the film came out, and, as was usual at that time, was surprised how different the book was to what is seen on the screen, this was my first book-to-screen experience.

A much more involved thread throughout, with very insightful writing about the state of human affairs and fears of the time. Although it’s a brilliant read for any sci-fi fan, and the author was artuhr ahead of his time, there are certain elements that the film actually does better, even though I am rodsszfia of those people who will always think that imagination is better than anything rodszeia makers can come up with. Although there could be an argument for explaining too much in this book, something, if I remember correctly the second film didI feel some exposition would have been a good idea.
Obviously this is just my opinion, and I’m sure there are plenty of A. C fans out there who would violently disagree. But all in all, this is one of those “must read” books for any generation. It feels like I’ve had this book sat on the shelf forever. I knew it was rodszseia the Books to Read Deciding it was about time I read it, I picked it up I didn’t rodsszia I’ve ever watched the movie, but I have a picture in my mind of apes circling the monolith, and HAL’s voice talking to Dave was also familiar, so maybe I did.
I need to watch it again? Fantastic book, I shouldn’t steer clear of this genre in future! I have read this book in the past in paperback but on seeing this book, and its three sequels, available 201 the Kindle, I decided to go ahead and buy all four.
Another of these slabs is hidden on the moon and acts as a kind of alarm clock telling its creators that these man-apes cladke developed to such a level that they have reached the moon. The book is close to the film except one major thing; in the book Japetus, a moon of the planet Saturn, is the destination whereas in the film the destination is Jupiter. An enjoyable and easy to read book that I finished in two days. A note on the Kindle version; no proplems at all.
Arthur C Clarke always brings out the science in science fiction and this is no exception. If you have seen the movie then be advised that in many respects the book is different and so much better for it.
I like the way that the clarks uses hard science to convey the wonder of the cosmos. From what little I knew about him I was expecting this to be a cold and very dry hard sci-fi book. Although it has the same plot as the film the book artthur a much different and deeper experience. In the film, Stanley Kubrik left all of the thinking to the audience about the plots meaning.
Arthur C Clarke takes you by the hand and opens it up to rodsszeka you a lot more to think about.
The film and the book complement each other very well. It’s still amazing to think that the film and book were written before humankind had walked on the moon such is the attention to detail on space travel.

A Space Odyssey: : Arthur C. Clarke, Dick Hill: Books
First few chapters were fantastic. Really enjoyed but didnt really get into it after about half way. I would still recommend as a read though but to me science fiction books seem to be very similar as they all use the same discriptions of spaceships and alient lights and planets etc Dont think I will read a space science fiction book for a while after reading two. To have imagined so many details which feature in this story so many decades ago, WOW!!!
It is the only book by this author which I have read, but I will certainly look out for more examples of his work. I can’t think of enough words which adequately express what I would like to set down, but I’m sure I’ll think of something, given time.
