This exclusive fishing tour will take you to the upper Ybbs (& Ois) river about two hours west of Vienna in the beautiful Lower Austrian limestone alps. As a perfect example of a nearly pristine pre-alpine river, the Ybbs is known for its clear waters and great stocks of trout and grayling.

The visited fishing beat covers around 10km of the scenic Ybbs river close to the city of Lunz am See, which has a long history in limnological research. The river’s natural character with varying depth and width forms ideal fish habitats and the fly fishing experience is extraordinary. The water is crystal clear allowing for unhindered sight casting.

In the upper part of the visited river section, the Ybbs (there called Ois and managed by diebewirtschafter.at) flows as a stretched river through a narrow valley, forming alternating deep pools, runs and riffle sections. The river width ranges from 8 to 20 meters. Main occurring species are brown trout and rainbow trout.

Downstream from the town of Lunz, the river bed is wider (20-25 meters) and discharge levels are slightly increased. Varying habitat conditions and extensive gravel banks ensure a perfect setting for a satisfying flyfishing experience. In the lower section, managed by the Austrian Fischereigesellschaft – ÖFG 1880, the main species is the European grayling, accompanied by rainbow trout.

Fish occurring in the upper Ybbs (belonging to the metarhithral fishbioregion) include:

  • Brown Trout (Salmo trutta)
  • Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
  • Grayling (Thymallus thymallus)
  • Bullhead (Cottus gobio)
  • European chub (Leuciscus cephalus)
  • Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis)
  • Eurasian Minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus)

Guiding will be provided in the form of a person with knowledge of the river and different fishing spots. The organizers also offer insights to the ecology of this river, since research in the field of fisheries management and fish ecology has been carried out over years in the designated area.

Please note that this tour is not a flyfishing course.

The fee for this tour will be approx. € 250 and will include transfer from and to Vienna, fishing licenses, lunch in the town of Lunz. Gear hire might be possible upon request.
